NAGADA

13 Refa’a Street
Dokki, Cairo, Egypt

One of my favorite places to shop in Cairo is called NAGADA and is located on the left bank on the Nile River between Qena and Luxor.  The best way to get there is to hire a taxi.  If you’re staying at a hotel go to the hotel desk and ask them to write your destination, as well as your hotel address, in Arabic. It would be a good idea to ask the taxi to wait for you while you’re shopping.
NAGADA has been weaving for over a millennia and they have their 1,000 year old looms to prove it.
By far the most popular textile produced by Egypt in the 20th century was the ferka.  The ferka, a scarf made of a combination of rayon and cotton, specialty died by the weavers employed many poor city people. However, in 1988 problems in Sudan caused most workers to abandon their projects.
Three years later a Canadian development project studied to restore the textile activity and taught craftsmen how to improve their weaving techniques. Although this specific study lasted only a year, the results inspired project leader Michel Pastore, Swiss potter turned fabric maker, to team up with Sylva Nasrallah, fashion designer, and create NAGADA.
Together they created the concept to reveal modern traits in clothing and fabrics as well as home furnishings which are adapted to contemporary life. They have a large ceramics section which is made by one of the owners and children.  I love this collection, especially the pottery made by the children, and have collected over 40 pieces.
Prices for Michel Pastore pottery:
(around) 860 Egyptian Pounds which = $151 USD

Prices for the children’s pottery:
(around) 130 Egyptian Pounds which = $5-23 USD
Price are dated for the year 2007
