In Paris it is just wonderful to go to grand hotels because they have the look and history we have all read about and seen. I was invited to have lunch at the famous Hôtel de Crillon in Paris and had a 5 course lunch with 4 wines.  I wish I had more photographs but at least my taste buds have the memories!  We ate Lobster Truffels and Truffel Soufflé in the hotel’s dining room, Les Ambassadeurs.   The lunch was a wonderful experience but I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for it because it was about $500. Also, I had Sunday brunch which was also wonderful. If you want to experience luxury in any famous restaurant and hotel you don’t have to have a sit down meal. I would recommend going to the bar and having a drink and an appetizer or having breakfast or tea if you would like to be more budget conscious. Your bill may still be around $50-75 dollars but it’s better than $500 and you will have a memory you’ll never forget!

Christmas Time in Paris

7am Walk from the RER

On one of my 7 hour layovers to Cairo, Egypt I had time to see Paris during Christmas. I arrived in Paris at 7am which gave me enough time to walk around the city and have breakfast & lunch before I had to take the RER,  the city’s commuter rail network, back to to the airport.

Paris in Morning 300x213 Christmas Time in Paris

Paris in Morning

Christmas in Paris is not as tacky as in the United States or Cairo, Egypt (Yes, there is Christmas in Cairo, and they have dancing Santa Clauses, terribly tough gingerbread cookies which you need to dunk in coffee to soften up, chocolate santa clauses and dutch shoes filled with more candy). Christmas in Paris has a touch of elegance from the restaurants to the hotels, especially the Ritz Hotel.

Le Café Marly

I had breakfast at Le Café Marly which is in the Louve facing the the glass Louve pyramid. It was a wonderful breakfast and it was nice to just sit there and look at the incredible glass pyramid that people were lining up to get in.  The shops at the Louve Mall had wonderful small gifts to take home.

After breakfast, I walked around the city towards the Ritz Hotel for lunch which is always one of my favorite destinations for a meal.  Breakfast or lunch is much more reasonable in the more expensive hotels, including the Ritz.

Le Méridien Etoile has so much to see and is located next to the metro with access to the Air France shuttle to Charles de Gaulle airport every 12 minutes. It was fun to stay here because it has almost everything.  It has conference facilities for business meetings, a health club, interior garden and a jazz club.

Everyone including tourists and locals were friendly and directing us to their favorite restaurants, bakeries and tourist destination.
I would recommend you visit the hotels famous Jazz Club Lionel Hampton. Considered by many and Parisians are jazz experts, to be the best in the city. The seats fill fast and reservations are necessary for the shows each night at 10:30pm. In the spring, the hotel has a Jazz Festival.

We had breakfast in the business lounge on the top floor of the hotel over looking the city. The room I had was not large but well designed and when I looked out at night I could see the Eiffel Tower blinking its lights.

I thought staying at Hotel Paris-Le Grand was a great privilege but The Four Seasons Hotel George V Paris way beyond that.

Four Seasons Hotel

I stayed in the Presidential Suite where President Clinton stayed two weeks prior to my visit. Mary Gallagher and I spent 6 days together in Paris.

When the bellman opened the door to the suite we saw a hallway that led to the library/office. Then we walked though the door and to the right and there was a living room, dining room and even a kitchen.

From the picture you can see how glamorous the apartment looks.  It even had a fireplace!  Down the hallway were the bedrooms which were enormous with giant walk-in closets.

Master Bathroom

The master bathroom had two sinks, a sauna, a shower, a steam room and a very large bathtub in the center of the room. Yes, I did think Clinton stood there to shave, Clinton sat down there, yes, Clinton showered there.  I never sat where a president had sat before!  The flowers at The Four Seasons Hotel George V were incredible.

Flowers in the Apartment

They are designed by Jeff Leatham who creates the arrangements for all the Four Season Hotels around the world.  When I’m at the Four Seasons Hotel in Cairo his arrangements are the first thing I see when I walk in the lobby.  In the apartment in Paris, there must have been 7 arrangements scattered around in different rooms. In my opinion and other’s he is sculpture not a florist.

I had breakfast in the apartment and the omelet was sad looking!

My Sad Breakfast Omelet

It was sitting on the plate all by itself! Breakfast for two was $65 dollars!  Breakfast downstairs in the restaurant was a little bit more elaborate.

The suite came with its own butler and even a gift of luggage with a shoe horn. Now I know how the rich and famous live!  George V know’s how to take care of their guests! I’m very grateful to have been one of them.

I was privileged to stay at the Hotel Paris-Le Grand with my friend Mary Gallagher.  It’s one of those places you’ve only seen in movies or perhaps read in books from the moment you walk into the lobby to the time you walk into your room.  If you’re lucky enough to have a balcony facing the Paris Opera House then you will feel like you’re a star.

The grand ballroom is an attraction of it’s own.  I would recommend trying to get a peak of it.

It is spectacular.  The Cafe de la Paix is a wonderful place for any meal especially breakfast.  When I fly to Cairo, Egypt I usually fly Air France and have a layover in Paris. I like to take the Opera Bus which goes downtown, right across the street from Hotel Paris-Le Grand, and have lunch at the Cafe de la Paix. Make sure you make a reservation for lunch or dinner ahead of time.
