Blue Hill in New York City

Blue Hill has received many glorious reviews. I don’t know why. I invited my two friends Stephanie & Armand to dinner. We each started with a glass of wine. Stephanie had soup ($15), Armand had the cod head ($16)and I do mean ‘cod head’, which he pulled apart with his chopped sticks, and I had roasted fennel ($16). For our entrees Stephanie had the turkey ($36). The turkey looked like it was pressed turkey, beautifully arranged as if it were novel cuisine. I would have rather had turkey in a New Jersey diner with mashed potatoes and cranberries for $10. I had the tuna ($34). It was beautifully prepared and probably the best tuna I have ever had. Armand chose to have the vegetarian dish. When I was outside waiting for my friends to show up, I looked at the menu. There was only one dish I didn’t understand what it was. That dish was the cauliflower steak. A cauliflower steak turns out to be a slice of cauliflower about 1/2 inch thick, sauteed or grilled, for ($32 freakin dollars)! I said to the waitress that it probably costs only 50 cents to make it and she said, “Sir, you’re wrong.” To me, this entree was an insult to good value in a restaurant. We had two desserts. The total bill with tax came to $234.08 before tip. I tipped $48 dollars which brought it up to $282.08! Yes, President Obama has eaten there, but has he gone back? I don’t plan to go back.

If you love Broadway, sell your gold and silver and fly to NYC to see Follies. I’ve seen the show five times! Twice at the Kennedy Center and three times on Broadway. The production is incredible, a masterpiece. You’ll never see costumes or performances like this again. Every performer stands out and they all deserve an applause.
These photographs are from after the opening night on September 12, 2011.

If you’re in Boise, ID and craving a really good sandwich, visit The Blue Moose Cafe. This was the greatest restaurant I ate at with the tastiest meal I had in the 5 days I was there. Hands down it is the best sandwich place west of the Mississippi. Next time, I’ll be going for dinner and the entertainment. Marcy, the owner, is always there with a smile- in a way she makes the food taste better. Hats off to The Blue Moose Cafe!

Two of my favorite antique shops in Georgetown are Darrell Dean Antiques & Metropolitan Interiors. I’ve known Darrell Dean as a very talented artist for many years. You’ll always find unique and ever changing items at his shop. If you find something you really like and want, I would recommend buying it when you see it because it probably won’t be there the next time you go. He has some wonderful antiques and vintage 20th century items. Right now he has a very large collection of hand colored fashion prints of beautiful ladies in 1920 & 30′s clothing. If you are into fashion posting these collections on the wall would make a great statement. I’m surprised people have not purchased the prints and have had the clothes recreated. I also love the incredible ceramics he has to offer. I always stop by when I’m in Georgetown to see what I can fall in love with. While your at Darrell Dean Antique, I would recommend walking next door to Metropolitan Interiors which is vintage 20th century. It’s easy to walk around and say, “I had one of those!” It will bring back many memories and for the quality of the pieces the prices are very reasonable. If you want a tour of the best shops in Georgetown walk from The Four Seasons Hotel on M St. and turn right on Wisconsin Avenue and walk until you end up at the Addison/Ripley Fine Art Gallery.
Ruth’s Chris Steak House
1801 Connecticut Avenue, N.W.,
Washington, DC 20009
I have been to several Ruth’s Chris Steak Houses around the country. Some of the Ruth’s Chris Steak Houses are franchised and seem to not be as good. Although every restaurant has a bad day, Ruth’s Chris Steak House on Connecticut Ave, in Washington, DC has never had a bad day. If you’re lucky enough to get Barbara as your waitperson, she’ll take good care of you. She not tall, has dark hair and has a funny but tough sense of humor. She makes you feel right at home.
The bargain is the set menu where I had a steak salad which is all greens, tenderloin beef- perfectly cooked, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach and for dessert we shared a small chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, which was wonderful, and we had bourbon bread pudding, which was the size of a saucer for a large coffee cup. I could have eaten the whole thing myself, but I had to share.
When you’re in Washington, DC and want a great steak and service from Barbara, head to the Ruth’s Chris Steak House on Connecticut Avenue.

Baked and Wired is a wonderful cafe with terrific baked goods. The cupcakes are bigger and better than Georgetown Cupcakes. My favorite cupcakes are the coconut, red velvet, Chai Tea Latte and German Chocolate. They are SO good. I also enjoy the coffee. Its at a beautiful location right next to the C&O canal. Sometimes when there’s water in the canal there are barges drawn by mules.
