The last time I was at Blues Alley Club, I saw Michel Legrand. Michel Legrand is a famous French Pianist/Composer who wrote very popular music from my generation including The Summers of ’42, The Windmills Of Your Mind- Thomas Crown Affair, Never Say Never- James Bond 007, Yentl, Umbrellas of Cherbourg and many others. I had never seen people cry at a jazz concert before his performance of Umbrellas of Cherbourg. I looked around the room and saw husbands and wives embracing one another, young men and women with tears in their eyes, and I felt chills down my core. If you have the chance to see Michel Legrand perform, GO! He is 79 and plays like he’s 30. His fingers move around the keyboard faster than you can move your eyes.
When you’re at Blues Alley Club it’s like being at a private concert. It’s a small and intimate space and you’ll definitely get to know the people at the next table because you will be at the next table. The chairs are so close you might not know which table you’re at. Blues Alley has been in business for as long as I can remember. It’s one of the oldest restaurants in Washington, DC. I use to go to a Strauss Ball every Year in New Jersey, but I never went for the food. I always went for the music and to dance. That’s exactly what Blue’s Alley is- people go for the music & entertainment and it’s very reasonably priced for what you get. If you see a Legend playing there check it out. Make sure to get there at least a half an hour early so you can get a good seat. I even got Michel Legrand to autograph my menu!
